Dr. Alexander Gougoutas
Dr. Gougoutas grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. With a father who is a retired organic chemist, he had early exposure to the sciences, though it was his older sister, a radiologist, who inspired his ultimate decision to pursue a career in medicine. Knowing that college would be his last chance to formally nurture his lifelong love of music, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in music theory and composition from the University of Pennsylvania. He then remained at the University of Pennsylvania to pursue his medical degree, where a serendipitous introduction to his future mentor—a craniofacial surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia—marked the beginning of his journey to become a plastic surgeon.
Dr. Gougoutas completed a combined general surgery and plastic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He then moved across the country to pursue a reconstructive microsurgery fellowship at the University of Washington. Dr. Gougoutas remained on the faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine as an assistant professor and then associate professor for seven years.
Dr. Gougoutas credits his early years in academic reconstructive surgery with helping him evolve into the surgeon he is today. Performing complex reconstructive procedures while teaching residents reinforced the importance of understanding not only how to perform an operation but also how to listen to patients and understand what they hope to achieve.
That perspective continues to guide his aesthetic practice. Dr. Gougoutas believes the decision to pursue plastic surgery should be personal, thoughtful, and motivated by the patient’s own goals rather than outside expectations.
Above all, he sees plastic surgery as a collaborative process. Honesty, communication, and trust are the building blocks for a successful surgical journey, from the initial consultation through post-operative care, and beyond.

During his tenure at the University of Washington, Dr. Gougoutas developed a diverse and complex practice focusing largely on implant-based and autologous breast reconstruction. As his passion for seeing breast cancer patients through their reconstructive journey grew, so too did his appreciation of the cosmetic challenges their surgeries presented. Mere appreciation quickly blossomed into a true love of cosmetic surgery, leading him to pursue a formal aesthetic surgery fellowship with a renowned cosmetic surgeon in Eugene, Oregon.
Professional Societies
After honing his skills through rigorous, dual-fellowship training and a prolonged tenure at one of the country’s premier universities, Dr. Gougoutas has firmly positioned himself at the forefront of the field. He has presented at numerous national and international plastic surgery meetings, and he is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Aesthetic Society, the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, the Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Washington Society of Plastic Surgeons.
In 2023, Dr. Gougoutas proudly joined the prestigious Polyclinic in downtown Seattle, where he specializes in advanced aesthetic and reconstructive procedures of the face, body, and breast, as well as non-surgical rejuvenation techniques.
Outside the office, Dr. Gougoutas enjoys playing the piano, hiking, biking, and spending time with his wife, son, and goldendoodle, James.
