Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

As we age, the skin of the arm slowly stretches – a process that may be exacerbated by large weight fluctuations. In extreme cases, skin may hang over the arm giving a “winged” appearance when holding the arms to the side.

Arm lift surgery, also known as a “brachioplasty,” reshapes the upper arms (from elbows to arm pits) by removing extra skin, and to a lesser extent fat, to produce more slender and toned contours.

How do I know if I’m a brachioplasty candidate?

Ideal brachioplasty candidates are close to their ideal weight and often demonstrate:

  • Saggy, hanging skin and / or fat of the upper arm that may even interfere with everyday activities or exercising
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit
  • Self-consciousness when wearing short sleeve or sleeveless clothes.
  • A feeling as though one’s arms are “out of proportion” or “too large”

Brachioplasty FAQs

Q. Will I require surgical drains following my brachioplasty?

A. No. In most instances surgical drains are not required following a brachioplasty.

Q. What is recovery like following a brachioplasty?

A. Minor swelling and bruising are expected to be present for up to 1 month following an arm lift, with most individuals returning to their daily routine within the same time. You will have activity limitations for the first several weeks following surgery, the details of which will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.

Q. Will liposuction be performed at the time of my brachioplasty?

A. Yes. Liposuction is often performed at the time of an arm lift to improve contouring. At the time of your consultation, Dr. Gougoutas will discuss whether or not you are a liposuction candidate.

Q. Will I have to wear anything special following my brachioplasty?

A. It is recommended that you wear a compression garment that covers the arms for several weeks following your surgery. This garment will help reduce swelling, sculpt the underlying tissues and minimize pain.

Q. Where will the incisions be placed with my brachioplasty?

A. The incisions will be placed in the natural groove that exists just underneath the bicep muscle and will extend from the elbow to the armpit on the front of the arm. The incision should not be visible when your arms are by your side or when arms are viewed from the back. In rare circumstances, the incision may be carried onto the side of the chest if there is skin redundancy in this region.
